A friend of mine aspires to visit all 50 states and is documenting her travels. This has caused me to think about where I've been. I've set foot on just 33 of our 50 states, living in 5 of them. Someday I'll calculate the land mass of the states I've visited as a percent of the total US land mass - gotta be near 90% (visiting Alaska and Texas will run that number up pretty quick). I may have flown into Newark once on a visit to NYC, but even if I go there, I'll never count setting foot in New Jersey. I also think I got into Maryland on a visit to DC. I may check that one off after more careful reflection.
